A direct drive wheelbase is the heart of a sim rig - it decides how much of the car you actually feel through your hands. But torque figures, quick release systems and mounting options can make the choice confusing. This guide walks you through the decisions that really matter, so you end up with a base that fits your driving, your rig and your budget.

What a direct drive wheelbase does differently

In a direct drive base, the steering wheel sits directly on the motor shaft - no belts, no gears in between. Every force the sim calculates reaches your hands without delay or smoothing: the tyres loading up in a fast corner, the moment the rear steps out, the kerb you just clipped. That is why almost every serious sim racer ends up on direct drive sooner or later.

Today, entry into direct drive is far more accessible than it used to be, and the real question is no longer "direct drive or not" but "which one". Four things decide it: torque, ecosystem, mounting and budget for the whole setup.

How much torque do you really need?

Torque (in Nm) is the headline number on every wheelbase, but more is not automatically better. You rarely race at 100 %. The point of extra torque is headroom: strong forces stay clean and detailed instead of clipping, and small details stay readable even when the wheel is heavily loaded.

Around 9-12 Nm - a great start

Plenty for GT cars, rally and casual racing. The Simagic Alpha EVO (12 Nm) and the Alpha EVO Sport (9 Nm) belong here - sharp, responsive force feedback without stretching the budget, which leaves more money for good pedals.

15-18 Nm - the sweet spot for most drivers

Enough reserve that you will rarely feel limited, even in high-downforce cars. The Simucube 3 Sport (15 Nm) and the Simagic Alpha EVO Pro (18 Nm) are typical choices for drivers who race regularly and want a base that will not hold them back.

25 Nm and more - no compromises

For formula cars, real-world drivers and anyone who wants maximum dynamics and control. The Simucube 3 Pro (25 Nm), the Simagic Alpha EVO Ultra (28 Nm) and the flagship Simucube 3 Ultimate (35 Nm) live here. Most owners never run them at full strength - the value is in the speed and precision of the response.

The ecosystem matters more than the spec sheet

A wheelbase is not a one-off purchase - it decides which steering wheels, quick releases and accessories you will buy for years. Before you compare numbers, look at the whole system.

Simucube 3

Simucube 3 runs on the Simucube Link ecosystem. Every base needs a Simucube Link Hub and a Link Quick Release - both sold separately, so plan them into your budget. In return you get LightBridge, which transfers power and data through the quick release without contact, plus Simucube Tuner software and a 23-bit angle sensor across the whole lineup. Wheels marked "SC" are the Simucube 3 versions; most other wheels with a 70 mm bolt pattern work too, connected over USB to the PC. Warranty is 3 years on the Sport and Pro, 5 years on the Ultimate.

Simagic Alpha EVO

The Alpha EVO family uses the QR50 quick release with wireless power and data to the wheel. Simagic wheels come with the wheel side of the quick release already fitted, so you just plug and race. Third-party wheels with a 70 mm bolt pattern mount via the Simagic QR-A adapter. The software is SimPro Manager and the warranty is 2 years. The big advantage is price-performance and a wide, affordable range of wheels.

In short: if you already know which steering wheel you want, start there and pick the base that supports it best.

Mounting and your cockpit

A direct drive base is only as good as what it is bolted to. If the rig flexes, part of the force feedback is lost in the frame instead of reaching your hands - and from around 15 Nm upwards, a rigid aluminium profile cockpit is no longer a luxury but a must.

There are two main ways to mount a base:

Bottom mounting - the base sits on the wheel deck of the cockpit. This works with all the bases mentioned here and is the simplest option.

Front mounting - the base hangs on a front plate, which brings the wheel closer and gives more legroom. Simucube 3 supports front and bottom mounting. On the Simagic Alpha EVO, a front bracket covers the magnetic interface, so it should not be combined with wheels that take power or data magnetically.

On Sim-Lab cockpits such as the Sim-Lab P1X Pro, Simucube 3 can be mounted directly, while the Alpha EVO goes on the wheel deck. Always check the hole pattern against the manufacturer's mounting drawing - you will find it in the Technical details tab of each wheelbase on our site. And if you are not sure, just ask us before you order.

Budget for the whole setup, not just the base

The most common mistake is spending everything on the wheelbase. To race you need a base, a steering wheel, pedals, a rigid cockpit and a Windows PC - all of these platforms are PC only. Pedals in particular have a bigger impact on lap times than a few extra Nm, so a balanced setup almost always beats a flagship base with entry-level pedals.

A rough rule: if you are starting out, a 9-12 Nm base plus good load cell pedals is the smarter buy than a 25 Nm base with basic pedals. Once the rest of the setup is solid, the wheelbase is the upgrade you will feel the most.

Simucube 3 or Simagic Alpha EVO?

We sell both, so here is our honest take:

Choose Simagic Alpha EVO if price-performance matters most, you are building your first direct drive setup, or you like the Simagic wheel range. You get excellent force feedback and more budget left for pedals and the cockpit.

Choose Simucube 3 if you want the base you will never need to replace: higher torque tiers, the reference force feedback character, EU manufacturing, a longer warranty and the LightBridge ecosystem. For most serious sim racers, the Simucube 3 Pro is the base that ends the upgrade path.

Frequently asked questions

Is a direct drive wheelbase worth it for a beginner?

Yes, if you plan to stay with sim racing. An entry-level direct drive base like the Alpha EVO gives you far more detail than gear or belt driven wheels and you will not outgrow it quickly.

Can I mount a direct drive wheelbase on a desk?

Lower-torque bases can work on a solid desk with a suitable clamp, but a dedicated cockpit gives a stiffer, more consistent feel and is strongly recommended from around 15 Nm upwards.

Do I need anything besides the wheelbase?

Always a steering wheel. Simucube 3 also needs a Link Hub and a Link Quick Release. Third-party wheels on a Simagic Alpha EVO need the QR-A adapter.
